Organic Wine Production

Organic wine production is rapidly becoming a preffered method of producing wines. Producing organic wines demands a cleaner and a non-chemically way of growing grapes at the vineyard. Is there a vineyard that can produce truly organic wine and stay in business?

Organically produced wines have previously been associated with being a bit dull, and what is considered as many of the worlds best wines have been produced in a far from organic way. A starting point about discussing organic wines is to decide exactly what the term organic means to you persnally.

Organic wines are made without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. It is also free of artificial preservatives and colouring dyes that are usually found in non-organic varieties.

As the organic movement continues to grows there is pressure from environmentalists and consumers that want to know to know exactly what goes into their food and drink. Why go organic on wine production?

It is a proven fact that many of our food and drinks contain chemical build up through the use of non-natural chemical based fertilisers and pesticides used producing and growing crops could affect a persons health by consuming them. The build up of these chemicals in a persons body may have the potential to cause long term health problems or may contribute to developing allergies. There is also the concern of chemicals from treated crops leeching into the ground and finding its way into drinking water. An environmental issue that has already produced many changes in general crop production and water treatment methods.

The alternative to all of this is to have vineyards grow grapes that produce their wines organically Organic farming and harvesting of crops is a more time consuming and expensive method of production that requires time to replenish the natural eco-system too. Setting up an organic vineyard means taking time to tackle many growing tasks by hand and finding other ways of handling the many organisms that harm wine crops. Organic production of wines is most common in hot dry regions where fungal infections are less likely, and where the expense of extra labor can more easily be reduced.
